Evaluate yourself
Do an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Better yet, have your peers do it. If your company has established metrics for this use them. Otherwise, there are a ton of resources available for peer reviews. For me, I had a glaring hole in strategic UX research. I have been doing tactical research for years but taking a more directional approach Think about your level of competence in these areas.
Evaluate your org
Look around your team, your organization, and your company. See if there are any areas that align with your self-evaluation. If there are, great! That's your opportunity area.
Step back
Now for the scary part. You're going to have to go learn something new. Maybe even start from scratch. Oh yeah, did I mention keeping up with your normal day to day?
Step up
Be a leader.
Don't ask for permission. Just do it.
